WATCHSPACE - Something Beautiful

Something Beautiful, January 2008

Five artists were commissioned to create an artwork sited within five prestigious gardens in Cheshire.

Each artwork reflected the artist's response to a garden that is widely thought to be beautiful. Each commissions responds directly to the environment it is sited within and reflects the uniqueness of that place.

  • At Arley Hall and Gardens, Rachel Ramchurn created 'Bulb' and 'Hug', two sculptures carved from a Beech Tree that had fallen during a storm.
  • At Combermere Abbey, Dr Swati Raut has created a site specific dance inspired by the peace and tranquillity of the walled gardens. This will be performed on Sunday 17 August 2008.
  • At Little Moreton Hall, Justine Cook used redundant stone and last year's beech leaves to create four artworks that reflect the passing of time at Little Moreton Hall.
  • At Ness Botanic Gardens, Jac Scott was inspired by a tool shed tucked away from public view and created Transplant a virtual shed in skeletal form. 'Transplant' was created primarily using materials destined for landfill.
  • At Tatton Park Lorna Green has created three installations inspired by the life cycle of deer at the Park. Lorna used fallen branches to represent antlers, painted in the colour of leaves from the yellows of early spring, the greens of summer and the rich tones of autumn.
